    Notes
    • Alice Hostetler Saylor of Meyersdale passed away in the In-Touch Hospice on March 7, 2012 from complications resulting from a stroke. Born in Meyersdale in 1921, she began her professional career as Deputy Recorder of Deeds for Somerset County in the 1940s, and retired as Business Manager of the Meyersdale Area School District in 1989. In that role she managed the financial planning that led to the building of the Meyersdale Elementary school. She served as Vice President, Pennsylvania School Board Association and President, Pennsylvania Association of School Board Secretaries. Mrs. Saylor was an active member of the community throughout her life. A charter member and Honorary Director of the Pennsylvania Maple Festival, she served on their board until 1984, initiating the purchase and development of Maple Festival Park in Meyersdale. As charter member and president of the Meyersdale Hospital Auxiliary, Mrs. Saylor was active in fundraising for the building of the Meyersdale Community Hospital, served on the Meyersdale Medical Center Board from 1990-2000, and the Board of Directors of the Somerset County Hospital Authority, 1986-1999. A Trustee of the Meyersdale Public Library Board of Trustees from 1950 to 2010, she helped lead “A New Home Now” effort that raised the funds to build the present library building. As charter member and Past President of the Meyersdale Area Historical Society, she was instrumental in the purchase and rehabilitation of the Western Maryland Train Station as a visitors’ center for the Great Allegheny Passage Rails to Trails Project. The YWCA of Greater Johnstown 2000 Tribute to Women recognized her outstanding service to the region with the Community Service Award; and the Meyersdale Lions Club named her Citizen of the Year in 2008. Mrs. Saylor’s image appears in a mural on the Somerset Trust Building in Meyersdale, where she looks down upon the community she loved and served so well. Alice Saylor was married to Thomas G. Saylor of Meyersdale from 1944 until his death in 1989. Her marriage to Leroy Glime (d. 2007) in 1999 was the last wedding in Somerset County in the 20th century. She is survived by children: Thomas G. Saylor and his wife Patricia, William J. Saylor, Diane Saylor Daniels; grandchildren: Sean Saylor, Shannon Bolman and Anne Saylor Daniels; nieces: Jean Hostetler Diaz, Alice Henry, Peggy Hostetler; nephews: Vince Campbell and John Hostetler; and four great-granddaughters: Riley, Aiden, Jordan Saylor, and Caroline Bohlman.
