TRAGIC DEATH OF CHARLES B. GETTY

Husband of Talented Writer Accidentally Killed at Cumberland, Maryland. The many readers of The Republican will be pained to learn of the sad bereavement that has befallen Sara Roberta Getty, one of the most able members of The Republican's staff of correspondents and contributors. Her husband, Charles B. Getty, was instantly killed last Thursday evening by being struck by a Baltimore & Ohio engine at the Harrison street crossing, Cumberland, MD. He attempted to cross the tracks as an engine was approaching and, his mind being preoccupied, apparently, he failed to heed the warning of the flagman at the crossing. It is said that when he persisted in crossing the track, the flagman grabbed him, and was himself almost drawn in front of the engine. After the man was struck, he was dragged for a distance of about 80 feet under the engine. It required nearly an hour to extract the body from underneath the engine.

The body was taken to the Butler morgue in the Butler ambulance and prepared for shipment to his home at Grantsville, where the funeral was held Sunday, the services being conducted by Rev. E.R. Oney, interment being made in the Grantsville cemetery.

Mr. Getty had left home several weeks before he met death to pick peaches at Pinto, Md. From there he went to Cumberland and was on his way to the home of his brother, Alvin F. Getty, when the end misfortune overtook him.

Charles B. Getty was the fifth son of the late Senator William R. Getty. He was born in Grantsville nearly 60 years ago and had lived there all his life with the exception of a few years when he was employed in Frostburg, MD. He was a telegrapher by occupation for many years and also conducted a small job printing office in Grantsville and was occasionally employed as a clerk and bookkeeper by some of the Grantsville business houses.

The bereaved family consists of the widow and two daughters, Mrs. Edmund Rapport of He..., West Virginia, and Miss Margaret at home; also one grandchild, the little daughter of Mrs. Rapport. He is also survived by the following brothers and sisters: Alvin O. Getty, bookkeeper, First National Bank, Cumberland, MD; John O. Getty, cashier, First State Bank, Grantsville, MD; Mrs. O.C. Keller, Grantsville; Mrs. Bruce Lichty, Meyersdale, and Leonard Getty, present address unknown.

Mrs. Getty desires to express through the Republic her deep appreciation of all the kindness shown her and her children in the darkest hour they have known. To those who lovingly proffered attendance at her home and of the church, and to those whose helpful letters are coming each day, and for all the beautiful flowers and other tributes coming from almost every home in the village, she tenders her sincere thanks and adds: "Their love and sympathy have come like a healing balm, and no matter how our paths may diverge, the memory of these kindnesses will brighten my life. May God abundantly bless them." Among the organizations that sent flowers were the Reformed Missionary Society and the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts of Grantsville.
