- FEARING (Fering; Ferin). 1. John, according to Cushing's MS., "came from Cambridge, in Old England," with Matthew Hawke and w. "and settled in New Hingham 1638." (It is on record that a John Fearing arrived in Hingh. with others in 1635. See "History of Hingham," by Solomon Lincoln, pp. 43,44). He had land granted him in 1635, 1647, etc., and after his decease other lots in the six divisions fell to his heirs, which were drawn in his name. He was a man of prominence in our early local history, and held various positions of trust and responsibility. Freeman 1652. Selectman 1648, 1661, and 1663; also deacon of the church for many yrs. The chris. name of his w. was Margaret. She survived him, and m. secondly, Nov. 3, 1675, Robert Williams of Roxbury. John d. 14 May 1665. In his will, dated three days previously, and proved 12 June foll., names w., two sons, and two dau's; the oldest s. to have a double portion. Inv. appraised at L331 04s. 00d. inc. two oxen, five cows, two cattle three yrs. old, one yearling bull, one old mare, one mare three yrs. old, one horse four yrs. old, one yearling colt, four goats, six swine, four "pigges," dw.-house, to which had "recently" been added a new end, much land, farming-tools, etc. "Farmer." Resided on North St., nearly opp. the meeting-house of the Universalist Society. (History of the Town of Hingham, Massachusetts Vol. II, III The Genealogies by George Lincoln; p 217.) The Genealogical Dictionary of Early New England Settlers by James Savage says that "preparations had been made for him, perhaps by Grant of Land, as early as 1635" and in History of the Town of Hingham George Lincoln writes that land records show that John Fearing was among the first wave of emigrants to leave Old Hingham in 1635. John died 14 May 1665 in Hingham MA. He married Margaret (___) in 1642 in Hingham and she died 22 Dec 1690 in Roxbury MA - she married Robert Williams on 3 Nov 1675. John and Margaret had four children, all born in Hingham."
John Fearing was born in England. He came to America from Cambridge, England in 1638 on the ship Diligent with his employer Mathew Hawke. His wife was named Margaret. John had received a grant of land in Massachusetts in 1635 preparatory to his coming. He settled at Hingham, Mass. where he was a selectman in 1648. He was a constable in 1650 and a deacon of the first parish church of Hingham. In 1652 he was a freeman. He was a clerk 1651-57 and lived on Fearing Hill. He had four children: John, Israel, Mary, Sarah. He died May 14, 1665. His widow Margaret married Robert Williams of Roxbury Nov. 3, 1675. John Fearing, from Cambridge, England, landed at Hingham, Mass. from the Ship "Diligent" in 1638. Record is in the register of the Old Ships Church there. Founded the towns of Hingham, Mass. and took up large tracts of land on Buzzard's Bay and along Cape Cod. Died 1665." (Frederick C. Fearing 1942 notes in possession of author.) The Gen. Benjamin Lincoln who was appointed by George Washington to accept the surrender sword of Gen. Cornwallis after the Battle of Yorktown was their great great grandson through their daughter Sarah.
