McKenzie, Zachariah W., a retired merchant of Edinhurg. was born in Mt. Auburn Township, this county, in a log cabin. March 3. 1849. he being a son of John and Leah (Girliford) McKenKie. The father was born near Booneville, (Bournville)Ross County, Ohio, and the mother on a farm near Hillsboro. Ohio.
After attending the early schools of his native county, the father, John McKenzie, began farming, following the calling of his father who had been a farmer in Maine before moving to Ohio, ?where he was one of the early settlers, and helped to clear off the land. When the paternal grandfather came to Ohio, wild animals were plentiful, in fact, John McKenzie often told of once shooting a panther not far from the family home. At an early day the grandfather made a trip overland to Illinois, but returned to Ohio, where he died, as did the grandmother. For a number of years, John McKenzie remained with his father, but finally came to Illinois, and when he was in the village of Chicago, he was offered land at the present busy corner of State and Madison streets, for $1.25 per acre, but not being able to look into the future, he refused, and went on to Christian County, where he took up eighty acres of government land in Mt. Auburn Township, his grant being signed by President Martin Van Buren. To his original farm he added until he had 600 acres of land, near Sand Ridge. Later he moved to Grove City, 111., where he died five years afterward, December 29, 1891, when he was seventy-seven years old. The mother survived him and died at the home of her son Zachariah W.
Until he was eighteen years old Zachariah W. McKenzie remained at Sand Ridge. Then he entered Delaware College, in Ohio, and took a two-year course, and afterward attended ti business college at Sandusky, Ohio, from which he was graduated, and then returned and began operating the homestead. Still later he embarked in a dry goods business at Atlanta, III., in partnership with J. A. McKenzie. his brother, and they continued together for eleven years, and also conducted a store at McLean. 111. At the end of the eleven years, they divided the stock and Zachariah W. McKenzie took his share and opened a store at Minier. 111., where he continued for sixteen years. He then moved to Edinburg, and bought the interests of his former partner, having then on hand $22,000 worth of stock. When he went out of business in 1909, he had a record of forty years as a merchant. Mr. McKenzie had purchased a farm of 480 acres of land in North Dakota, and he also inherited 120 acres of land in Christian County and a business block at Edinburg. At present he is engaged in looking after his private interests. His present comfortable residence he bought of Fred Anderson.

Williams, and they have one daughter, Marion Alice McKenzie Williams. Mr. McKenzie is a Knight of Pythias and in polities is a Republican.
Also from Bobbie McKenzie:
Wow! Wish every MacKenzie/McKenzie line were so well documented. Well, after a lot of re-reading and fact comparing, I suggest that there were two Zachs in Christian Co. As we saw there was the line of Gabriel there at the same time.
1. father John being a farmer in Maine—Maybe misread abbreviation for Md. This is John born 1786, son of Joshua. John died 1865.
2. Story about father being early settler: Pioneer Reminiscences of Ross Co, Oh, by Putman 1879 says the family was there in 1796.
3. Story about shooting panther also recounted in above source. doubt if someone would make this up 100 years later.
4. John being the son of a John makes reading the Historical Encyclopedia article confusing. On re-reading I think it says that John b. 1815 died 29 Dec. 1891 not Zach.John is buried Grove City, Ill.
5. Dates of death: John 1815 died Dec., Zach died July..
Does this make sense? Bobbie

Hi, Bobbie. Thank you for taking so much time to write out the lineage for Illinois Zach. I've attached what I could scrounge together on PA Zach, meager as it is. Most of my early notes came from Betty Smith in Philly, but we did work on some of this within the past year when the short obit appeared on the Grantsville Library site. I believe that even though Martha (Zach's wife) is supposed to have died in Canada, that she died in Maryland, returning with the younger children. The Jeremiah who received the news of Zach's death was Jeremiah James McK., 1845-1907. PA Zach was the 7th of 12 children of John M. (1795-1863) and Barbara Engle (1818-1905).

Hi, Sheryl, have been wanting to “meet'’ you. With all the Johns, Moses and Samuels in this line who would have thought that we’d also have an abundance of Zachariahs?? But you know the McKenzie propensity for using the same name. Let’s see if we can figure this out:

4. But other McKenzies from the line Of Gabriel also went to Christian Co.
From History of Christian Co., Ill.
Gabriel McKinzie was born in 1797 and
died in Taylorville Oct. 22, 1862; he settled
in this county at an early day; was a great
fiddler and played for all the dances and

notony of 'a pioneer life and enjoy the inno-
cence of youth. Christian Co Ill
According to others he is of the line of John and Cecily Porter McKenzie, son of old Gabriel and Sarah Durbin. They came via Kentucky. Would be distant cousins.

5.I believe the Historical Encyclopedia was published in 1910, not that far from the incidents recorded. However, we must also consider Goodspeeds’ vanity biographies which were often inaccurate. And this one has John coming from Maine??
