- Missionary Has Kinfolk Near Here - A 55-year-old woman whose father, brother and sister still reside in nearby Somerset Co., was identified as the last American missionary to be flown out to safety from the western Congo where terrorists have been on the rampage, according to a United Press International dispatch from Leopoldville. The missionary, Miss Mae Clark, was flown to safety Saturday despite her efforts to remain behind and try to protect the 19 children at her orphanage at Kalanganda in Kwilu Province. Miss Clark refused until the last to leave unless the 19 children were permitted to leave with her. The terrorists refused to let them fly out and United Nations officials finally persuaded her she should leave. A Lutheran missionary, Miss Clark is one of eight children of Joseph Clark, 84, of near Pocahontas in Greenville Township. He is now visiting with a son in Carlisle, Pa. One of the missionary's brothers, Earl Clark, also lives near Pocahontas. A sister of the missionary is Mrs. Robert "Bud" Newman of Salisbury, Pa. The Cumberland News, February 3, 1964
May and Mom were especially close, and she came to visit us each time she came to the States, which wasn't often.
