- FROSTBURG — Violet P. “Martha” McKenzie, 90, died Saturday, Oct. 22, 2011, at the WMHS Frostburg Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Born April 18, 1921, in Frostburg, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Payne and Violet Cook. She was also preceded in death by her husband, William J. McKenzie. Mrs. McKenzie was a member of Frostburg United Methodist Church, Farrady Post 24 American Legion Auxiliary, a member of the National, State and Allegany County Retired Teachers Associations and a life member of Maryland Congress of Parent and Teachers Inc. Martha was a retired school teacher having taught for thirty-two years, with thirty-one years at East Side School. She was a graduate of Beall High School and Frostburg State. Surviving are her brother, Harry Payne and wife Irene, of Knoxville; a nephew, Dr. Harry Payne and wife Ruth, of Shrewsbury, Pa.; a niece, Judy Powers and husband John, of Hedgesville, W.Va.; and four grandnephews, Daniel Fry, Russell Fry, Tom Payne, and Steve Payne and wife Jessi. Funeral services will be conducted in the Durst Funeral Home P.A., 57 Frost Ave., Frostburg, on Tuesday, Oct. 25, 2011, at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Jennifer Webber officiating. Friends will be received one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in the Frostburg Memorial Park. Condolences may be sent to the family at Durst Funeral Home.
