    • GRANTSVILLE — Gary Matthew McKenzie, 35, of Main Street, Grantsville, died Saturday, July 20, 2002, as a result of a single car accident near Grantsville, on I68 and Lower New Germany Road Intersection. Born Dec. 23, 1966, in Bedford, Pa., he was the son of Richard Dwight McKenzie, Pinto and Bonnie Kaye (Shipley) McKenzie and special friend, F. Chris Hauser, Cumberland, Md. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Richard Shipley; and paternal grandparents, Marshall J. and Emma A. (Wertz) McKenzie. Mr. McKenzie was a truck driver for D&R Trucking. He was a graduate and former instructor for Diesel Institute of America. His interest in the fire departments started with becoming a member of the LaVale Rescue Squad at 16 years of age. He later joined the Bowman's Addition Volunteer Fire Department, where he became Fire Chief. Gary was recruited by St. John's Island, N.C., to work as a Professional Fire Fighter, for their community. Following his employment there, he returned to Grantsville as a professional truck driver and joined the Grantsville Volunteer Fire Department. He also served in the U.S. Army from 1984 to 1987. Besides his parents, he is survived by his maternal grandmother, Dora Shipley, Cumberland; a sister, Michelle Renee Harris and husband William H. Jr., Cumberland; a niece, Spencer Courtney; and a nephew, William Harris III. While on tour with the NASCAR driver, Sterling Marlin Sales Inc., his fiancee, Robin Durst, recently died suddenly from an acute asthma attack. Now Gary and Robin are joined in their eternal bond. Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Tuesday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Wednesday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Bernard A. Yost officiating. Interment will be in Maryland Veterans Cemetery at Rocky Gap, Flintstone. Military honors will be accorded at the graveside by the Combined Veterans Honor Guard. Pallbearers will be Chris Milburn, Rich Milburn, John Miller, Greg Bake, Willy Damm, and Kurt Hauser. July 22, 2002, Cumberland Times-News.
