Michael MacKenzie Mattox was born in Colleton District, SC in 1750, and was a brother of John Mattox, R.S. He married about 1775, Mrs. Elizabeth Williams, born 1755 in SC, a daughter of James Joyce, R.S., of Orangeburg District, and widow of Zachariah Williams of Barnwell District. She had three children born by her first husband, viz: Zachariah Williams, Jr., Elizabeth who was born in 1772 and married Mark L. Addison, and James Williams. The two sons lived in Barnwell District, but Mrs. Addison moved to Georgia, first to Tattnall County, later to Ware County, and finally to Columbia County, FL, where she died February 11, 1861.
Michael M. Mattox was a soldier in the Revolution. Record is found of payment to him by the State of South Carolina for 104 days service in the state militia during the war.
About 1801-02 Michael M. Mattox and family moved to the new county of Tattnall. His brother John and family moved at the same time, also son-in-law, William Eason and family, and others of the connection. In Tattnall county he granted serveral tracts of land and bought others, became a large landowner and an influential citizen. He died testate in Tattnall in 1815 and his will dated January 18, 1815 was offered for probate July 4, 1815, and probated August 7, 1815. It named his sons, John and Elijah, as executors, and bequethed his property to his wife and to his sons, John, Elijah and Aaron and his son-in-law, Wm. Eason.
Barnwell County, SC deed records show a deed of record there from Michael M. Mattox and his wife, Elizabeth, "of Barnwell County", to William Tucker, Jr., dated Nov. 17, 1800 to 100 acres of land on Little Saltketcher (Deed Book No. 2, page 168, Barnwell County, SC). Tattnall County records show bill of sale to slaves from Mrs. Elizabeth Mattox, widow of Michael M. Mattox, to "my daughter", Elizabeth, wife of Mark Addison, dated Nov. 25, 1816; also another bill of sale, same date, to "my son", James Williams of Barnwell District, SC (Deed Book B, page 205, Tattnall County). The will of James Joyce in Tattnall County identifies Mrs. Mattox as his daughter, and as a legatee.
