Notes |
- There was an accidental shooting over at Ridgeley, W. Va., yesterday afternoon about 3 o'clock, in which a girl was wounded in the lower limbs and another narrowly escaped being wounded. Frank Monnett, aged 14, son of Mr. Joseph Monnett, was handling a Marvin repeating shotgun. Several children were playing in the house of Mr. C. Moreland, track hand for the Western Maryland railroad, living on Carpenter road, opposite the round house. Sophie C. Moreland aged 10, and a younger girl of a neighbor's were in a back room, while the lad, Frank Monnett, and other children were in the room adjoining, a door communicating. The girls were standing near the door, rather to the side, in the back room. The Monnett boy picked up the shotgun that had been left standing in a corner of the front room, and approaching the door took a position at one side of the doorway on the front room side, and began fooling with the gun. In a moment there was a loud report mingled with the screams of the children, two of whom, Sophie Moreland and the neighbor's child, lay upon the floor. The younger child soon arose to her feet. but Sophie was found to have been shot. She was placed upon a couch and upon examination it was found she had been shot in both limbs above the knees. Dr. Twigg was sent for and upon his arrival it was found that the girl had received about forty No. 6 shot in one limb and about a dozen in the other, one of the limbs being badly lacerated. Dr. Twigg says the girl will recover, but should complications arise he will have the patient removed to the hospital. The other little girl did not receive any of the shot, but her clothing was burned at the neck by powder, so close had she been standing to the weapon when it went off. All that saved the Moreland girl from instant death was that the load first struck the arm of a large chair, shattering it into many pieces, deflecting the course of the shot and weakening their force. The boy who came very near causing the death of two persons says he did not know the gun was loaded. The Evening Times, Cumberland, August 19, 1907
He died on 15 Sep 1954 at the age of 61 in Cumberland, Allegany Co., Maryland.
