| Notes |
- James' father Daniel was born in Maryland, his mother in Virginia. Daniel's family moved to Illinois via Kentucky about 1820.
On 3/22/1850 and 3/26/1850 James bought 160 acres of federal land in Macoupin Co.
In 1850 census he listed his occupation as Farmer, but in the 1860 census James listed his occupation as a House Carpenter.
At age 33 James enlisted in the Union army on March 29,1864 and was in Co. H 50th. Ill. Vol. in the Civil War. He enlisted in Alton, Madison Co., Ill. James was mustered out on May 30, 1865.
According to Dale McKinzie, descendant of James Gray McKinzie, the spelling of the family name changed due to a clerk's error when James Gray McKinzie enlisted in the Union Army.
After the war he got into an arguement in a bar. He got his lip cut bad, went home and sewed it up himself! James then went back with a gun looking for the other guy, who of course by then had made himself scarce. James was in logging and sawmilling.
James and Eliza left the Plainview, Ill. area after 1866. They went to Missouri and then to Knoble, Ark. before 1900. Again he listed his occupation as a house carpenter.
After James' death, Eliza moved to Lasalle, Illinois. She may have lived with her son "Jake" and moved north with his family. James and Eliza are buried in Bond Cemetary, Knoble, Ark.
According to the Illinois state archives' database of Civil War Veterans, James is listed in the 50th Ill. rolls with his surname spelled MCKENZIE! However, record received from archives clearly shows him mustered as MCKINZIE. *Because James died in 1901 and America's involvement in W.W.I didn't begin until 1917, the original researcher may have meant the Spanish-American War in 1898. James turned 68 that year!
