    Notes
    • Mary Margaret MCKENZIE (Andrew George-2, Elias Marcellus-1) was born on 15 Jan 1909 in Avilton, Garrett Co., Maryland. She died on 30 Sep 1937 in Potomac Park, Allegany Co., Maryland.

Mary Margaret MCKENZIE and George Elwood BROADWATER were married. George Elwood BROADWATER (son of Wade BROADWATER) was born about 1907 in Avilton, Garrett Co., Maryland. He died on 30 Sep 1937 in Potomac Park, Allegany Co., Maryland.

State and county officers today sought two girls, passengers in the car that struck and killed a young married couple late last night on the McMullen Highway, near the Celanese plant. Arrangements for an inquest were held up, pending the appearance of the two witnesses. State's Attorney Morgan C. Harris said the girls apparently became frightened and fled, after the car of John Henry Davis, Jr., 23, of Bowling Green, had crashed into George E. Broadwater, 30, and his wife, Mrs. Mary Margaret Broadwater, 28, of Potomac Park.

"The girls will not be prosecuted," Corporal Thomas A. Currie, of the Siate Police, said this morning, "but we need their testimony at the inquest." The driver of a car in such accidents is never called to testify at an inquest.

Corporal Currie, who arrived at the scene of the mishap a few minutes after Broadwater and his wife were hurled from the highway, reported that Davis' car passed the Celanese plant gates at terrific speed "between 70 and 80 miles an hour." The accident occurred approximately 500 yards from the plant, and within 200 yards of the home of the victims.

The state officer said he and Celanese police commented on the excessive speed of the car when it passed the plant gates. Corporal Currie started for Cumberland a few minutes later and found Davis in his badly damaged car at the crest of a hill, about one-third of a mile from the point where the coup!e were killed. The right front wheel was broken, the fender crushed and the windshield and front headlight shattered, according to the officer.

Davis was still in the car and admitted that he that he had struck the couple, Corporal Currie said. While the officer went back to search for the bodies, the two girls who were with Davis disappeared and probably were picked up by a passing motorist.

Davis was quoted by police as saying he did not know the girls and that he "picked them up" at the Walkathon, along the National Highway, six miles west of this city. His car was headed toward Cumberland at the time of the accident. Davis was taken to the county jail by Corporal Currie, Deputy Sheriff Edgar M. Lewis and Corporal James O. Shockley. Dr. George P. Paulman, county coroner, assisted in the investigation. The death car driver is held without bond, pending the outcome of the inquest.

Corporal Currie said Mr. and Mrs. Broadwater, both employed at the Celanese plant, finished work at II p. m. and walked to the nearby roadhouse of Calton Newman, where they had their pay checks cashed and immediately started to walk to their home on the opposite side of the highway and a few hundred yards away. They had crossed the road and were walking on the right shoulder when they were run down from the rear.

Mrs. Broadwater was thrown more than 20 feet from the road. Both of her legs were severed above the ankles from the force of the impact, her skull was crushed and her body badly cut and bruised. Her husband was hurled several feet from the road, and his skull fractured. Both were instantly killed, police said. Money from their pockets was scattered over the roadway. Davis told officers that he was traveling "about 20 miles an hour" and failed to see the couple until his car was a few feet from them, and he was unable to avoid them. Davis is also a Celanese employe.

The bodies will remain at the Hafer chapel until Saturday evening when they will be taken to the home of Mr. Broadwater's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wade Broadwater, near New Germany, Garrett county, Maryland. Double funeral services will be conducted Sunday at 2 p. m. at the Methodist Episcopal Church, New Germany, with interment in the church cemetery.

Two children, Alleene and Marvin, survive. Other survivors of Mr. Broadwater, besides his parents, are two sisters, Mrs. Clinton Michael and Mrs. Austin Michael, both of Barton, and a brother, Gorman Broadwater, Bond. Other survivors of Mrs. Broadwater are her father, Andrew McKenzie, Avilton; three brothers, Frances McKenzie, Avilton; Bernard and William, both of McMullen highway; four sisters, Mrs. Albert Green, Barton; Mrs. Norman McLuckie, this city; Mrs. George Ross, Avilton, and Miss Nora McKenzie, McMullen highway.
